Steve Jobs and the Leadup to the iPhone

This New York Times article about Apple’s internal prep for the iPhone is a great read. One of my favorite quotes is about how Steve Jobs would belittle employees.

Very rarely did I see him become completely unglued — it happened, but mostly he just looked at you and very directly said in a very loud and stern voice, ‘You are [expletive] up my company,’ or, ‘If we fail, it will be because of you.’

Cookie Clicker Calculator

One of the most annoying parts of the new game Cookie Clicker is the waiting. So I made a little tool to help make it more bearable. If you’re a Cookie Clicker junkie I hope you enjoy this.

Celebrity Faces in Peripheral Vision Look Weird

This is apparently a well documented phenomenon, but when you see a series of faces in rapid succession in your peripheral vision, they look grotesque and distorted.

To see this effect, click through these images (or use your keyboard’s left/right keys) and keep your eyes on the gray cross in the center. Crazy.

It’s amazing how much they look like cartoon caricatures. My guess is that caricature artists have learned how to amplify this natural effect in their drawings. Pretty cool stuff.

GoPro Camera Mounted to an Eagle

This is simultaneously beautiful, amazing, and hilarious.

There’s something about seeing its head move as it looks around… it just kills me.

Your Favorite Saturday Night Live Cast

Interesting observation from SNL’s creator and long-time producer, Lorne Michaels. It definitely rings true for me, and I’m impressed with how well he knows his audience.

People attach to the cast they see in high school. In those years they generally can’t drive. They don’t have any money. Staying up late is exciting. Being with friends up late is really exciting. So they’re very connected to the cast they see then.

Gears Found in Nature

A few weeks ago I posted about mechanical movements. Well it turns out for the first time, scientists have found one of those motions in nature.

This article is a fascinating read, and speaks to the wonder and power of evolution.
