The Greatest Architecture Porn Website of All Time

If you like to gaze at beautiful homes you can never afford, The Location Department website is for you.

What sets this site apart from traditional architecture porn is the sheer quantity of photos. Since it’s geared toward the professional film, magazine, and television industry, every location is copiously documented with dozes (sometimes hundreds) of images.

To get started, I recommend diving into the page titled Modern, Apartments, Lofts, Brownstones & Townhouses: New York City

Browsing these amazing homes I found myself alternating between feelings of amazement and rage. Have a look and you’ll see what I mean.

One Week of WTC Construction Progress

Looks like they’re going for two floors every two weeks. Not too shabby.

Looks like more progress in the last two days…

1 World Trade Center Construction Progress

Since it’s official that Condé Nast is moving into 1 World Trade Center (formerly known as the Freedom Tower, formerly the site of, well, you know) I thought I’d document some of the building’s construction. With my iPhone pressed up against my trusty Nikon spotting scope (more on that here) I’m able to get a fairly decent view from my apartment in Long Island City.

Word is they’re building a floor a week, so let’s see how accurate that is. From the photo above it looks like they prop up a section of the floor with some type of scaffolding, then build around it. Let’s see what happens.

Empire State Building Photo

I snapped this out of the back window of Snooth’s new offices in midtown. I highly recommend checking out the full resolution version.

In related news, our proximity to the Empire State Building is what made our (former) insurance company refuse to insure us. If you ask me, it sounds like the terrorists won.

Cleedence

Proof positive why I should start carrying my Flip video camera around more often. I have no idea who this guy is, but Susan Boyle should be trembling in her big fat shoes. Brief cameo and camerawork by the one and only Todd Suchotliff. He’s my savior. He’s your savior.

Soho Photo

As seen in SoHo on my way to work two days ago.

As a bizarre complement to this photograph, the orange sticker in the window of the SUV was a remnant from a funeral procession, as you can see from this crop of another (ie, suckier) photo I took.

Life on Mars

I saw a filming of “Life on Mars” the other day while on my way to work. I snapped a photo that didn’t seem too interesting at the time – an old-fashioned fire truck and police car, some extras dressed in 1950s garb, a big crew – the usual. But check out what I saw when I blew up the photo (below). Either there’s a scene that features the invisible man, or it’s a stunt man who’s going to be set on fire. My money’s with the fire one. Any viewers of Life on Mars want to let me know if I’m right in the coming weeks? Does anyone even watch that show?

Thanksgiving Parade Video

I had a wonderful and totally not-terrifying experience at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday.
